Useful Thai Phrases

Although it is possible to get by in Thailand with little or no knowledge of the language, some basic words and phrases can be very handy. A hello and a thank you can go a long way. Your average traveler may never master Thai, but even fumbled attempts are greatly appreciated by the Thai people.

As a rule, Thais are very polite, and conversation can be quite formal. The easiest way to show this is by ending sentences with kha if the speaker is female, or khrap if the speaker is male.

While traveling through Thailand there are sure to be numerous opportunities to practice your Thai with with a local who equally appreciates the chance to practice his or her English. As English is now taught in all of the schools, it is common to finder younger people anxious to try out their new vocabulary with you. This is a really positive and often ammusing way to interact with the local people.

Hello = sawadee (kha/khop)

Thank you = khorp khun (kha/khop)

Yes = chai

No = mai chai

I understand = khao jai

I don't understand = mai khao jai

How much? = thao rai?

Where is the bathroom = Hong nom you thii nai?
